Copyright

Copyright is still a concern of ours. Even with this being a different situation than normal, we still need to be mindful of copyright laws. While we would hope that because of the current circumstances publishers would not be litigious, there is not a guarantee.

Please follow these guidelines in regards to using copyrighted IM:

  1. Use our subscription digital resources for content that this already licensed for us to use with students
  2. Use the resources and permissions listed in the documents linked below.
  3. Search online for read-alouds that are already legally posted,
  4. If you choose to create NEW content, follow these guidelines:
    1. Post excerpts of read-aloud books and videos rather than the full work;
    2. Consider using books from publishers who have given advance permission to use their materials in light of the COVID-19 pandemic (see #3);
    3. Ensure that works are posted on a password-protected platform that limits downloading and further distribution beyond the students enrolled in the particular class;
    4. Direct students and teachers to your district's relevant intellectual property and acceptable use policies;
    5. Ensure that the materials will be provided at the teacher's direction during the relevant lesson as part of the particular class' normal coursework and are directly related and of material assistance to the lesson content; and
    6. Evaluate whether the copyrighted works are already subject to a license agreement between the district and the copyright holder/vendor and consider whether the license agreement would allow the district post the works on a virtual learning platform (see #1)
